Born after China’s Cultural Revolution He An was raised during China's industrial expansion. His body of work is inspired by China’s expanding cities; its neon signs, bright lights, and evolving language.
He An's light sculptures are created through found neon signs in his native city of Wuhan. The characters are used to recreate the names of his friends and family members in an autobiographical manner. It questions legality and taboos in contemporary Chinese culture.
He An currently lives and works in Beijing.
