In Smoking and Waiting (1971), Weber returns to using charcoal and the more naturalistic depiction of figures found in her work of the 1950s. The two women in the picture could be friends getting ready for a party, theatre actors between performances, or sex workers in a brothel. What is clear is an unabashed defiance and a punk attitude which speaks of New York City itself.
