Demodex Quilt (2024) is a large fabric wall-hanging that combines hand-dyed patterns with close-up printed images of the artist's body and cartoon-like stuffed body parts such as eyes and tongues. The title refers to Demodex mites that live inside hair follicles, feeding on dead skin cells and coming out at night to mate. Combining candy-coloured imagery with aspects of the monstrous and grotesque, Gibbens' work highlights the strangeness of our own objecthood as living fleshy machines.
