"A painting by Malevich is imaged in 2 opposed directions. In historical installation photographs Malevich hangs some works with different sides up. Normally I would have made the background a solid color but here in the process of filling in the ground I liked what the separated strokes made of the space and decided to leave it open with the white ground visible. The gestural vertical passes of red differentiate themselves from the red of the Malevich painting. But as they are both red it takes a little extra effort to pick out the figures from the ground."
