Jann Haworth’s Black and White Film Cloak (2023) brings together the artist’s lifelong connection to Hollywood with her pioneering use of textiles and soft materials. Raised in Los Angeles, Haworth grew up surrounded by the film industry through her father, Ted Haworth, an Academy Award-winning production designer. The cloak incorporates imagery from films including Some Like It Hot, Sunset Boulevard, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Strangers on a Train arranged across its surface like a sequence of film stills. The work celebrates cinema and its lasting impact on the viewer: the films we encounter become part of our memories and experiences, carried with us much like a garment we wear. The work brings together two central strands of Haworth’s practice: her engagement with Hollywood and popular culture, and her longstanding challenge to the boundaries between fine art, textiles and craft.
