WALTER + ZONIEL | 56th INTERNATIONAL VENICE BIENNIAL | PALAZZO BEMBO

As part of group exhibition Personal Structures : Crossing Borders, curated by Global Art Affairs Foundation multi-disciplinary artist duo Walter & Zoniel present an installation at the Palazzo Bembo.  Showcasing their works in conversation with: Carl Andre, Daniel Buren, Guenther Uecker, Francois Morellet, Richard Long, Yoko Ono, Lawrence Weiner, among others. Presented at the Palazzo Bembo Walter & Zoniel’s installation Presence, Reality, Survival, allows the viewer a moment of immersion within the world captured by the artists on the streets of Liverpool & Miami. Recently completing their touring site specific installation The Physical Possibility Of Inspiring Imagination In The Mind Of Somebody Living, using giant tanks of live jellyfish installed in disused buildings in each city. These were juxtaposed against their residential surroundings and hidden behind an electronic shutter during the day, only exposed every evening, and opening anonymously, once dusk had fallen. Each night Walter & Zoniel filmed through the tanks and the Jellyfish to the streetscapes beyond. Capturing the space, calm, excitement and plethora of reactions as peoples’ day to day existence collided with the surrealism placed in their locality. Viewed close-up, the jellyfish mesmerised those who stumbled across the work, viewed as a whole work from afar, each building appeared to be housing constellations, nebular clouds, softly moving and entrancing those within site.

Presence, Reality, Survival reverses the artists live installation, and reveals those captured streetscapes, the space and intensity of the external world now housed within its own ‘tank’. Viewers of the work at Palazzo Bembo can experience the sense of ‘the reveal’ that those on the street would have seen each evening, as the films are hidden behind a shutter until the room is entered, a potential environment hidden until realised. However, the films inside are a reflection of ourselves looking out, searching for more or mesmerised with what we each see.
