In “Dead Leaves Lie Still”, I have casted in concrete the central sections of palm branches in order to make heavily physical something which is abstract. The palm leaf is a symbol of religion, being a powerfully redolent object in Christianity, in Islam and in Judaism. Religion exists in the mind and the culture; it is not physically tangible in space. Here, the palm leaves profoundly occupy space. In being reminiscent of unearthed animal bones – dinosaur parts, ancient whalebones, fossils – they suggest the enduring nature of religion, that it is always there beneath the surface, that sacred stories are omnipresent. Stories – those intangible things that can never be owned like an object by a single individual – have hereby been made to bring their significance into the physical dimension, the realm of space and matter.
