The last painting came about when I came across an interview by David that Derek hadn't heard before. In it David talks about his very unhappy school days and also at home . He didn't get on with his mother and his father had a drink problem. At school they forced him to write right handed. He said what changed his mind was reading Jack Kerouac's " On the Road ". He said he realises he didn't have to be conventional and immediately went out and bought a saxophone ad started painting
The background images in black and white are from one of Derek’s latest films( I have been doing this in several paintings ) . It is of a young dancer doing B-Boy dancing a current trend that is a more sophisticated development from the earlier brake dancing. Which is more a combination of mime, ballet and contemporary signage.
The starting point for the series was an email that I had received from David in which he told me how much he liked my Thames and Hudson book. He said:
derek,
i just had to write and tell you how much i love the book that has just been published. your work really cascades over the decades and is utterly real and convincing. you really are a master, cush!!
