RORY MCCARTNEY | DAVID JONES | HYO MYOUNG KIM: RORY MCCARTNEY | DAVID JONES | HYO MYOUNG KIM
Rory McCartney’s paintings trigger a sense of excitement with his use of contrasting colours and gorgeous sense of materiality – employing layers of magma like paint onto a variety of surfaces. His meticulously planned compositions reference 18th C marbled end-papers and their subsequent appropriation into the psychedelic forms of 1960ʼs counter culture.
Due to the nature of the medium, Rory’s works are spontaneously and organically formed. The patterns created through the inability to control the paint’s behavior on canvas evokes references to 1960s pop psychedelia and somewhat contrastingly, the 18th century marbled book and papers.
David Jonesʼ scintillating baroque paintings capture the viewer with their bravura use of saturated colour and high gloss finish over which is then worked a rich tracery of thick, gestural brushstrokes and intricate, finely-drawn detail. The works capture the dynamism of writhing movement and the exquisite tension and energy at the heart of an explosion.
Embedded in Jones’s work is the idea of the Baroque. His paintings, which are organically and spontaneously formed, represent a decadent celebration of the
medium. Intricate ink lines respond to the paint that is already there allowing the artist to interact with his work in interesting and specific ways.
Hyo Myoung Kim creates works that contemplate the connection between pixels in digital images and modern art. These two opposing sides - the real and the antireal sit together in the same image but only one side can be visually perceived at one time. For Gazelli Art House, Kim presents a series of new works.
Hyo Myoung Kim is a digital media artist with influences from the pioneering ideas of the early chrono photographers such as Eadweard MuyBridge and Etienne–‐Jules Marey. Utilizing sound and light, Hyo Myoung provides an evocative ‘map’ of the visual and audial experience; trapping fragments of time and movement in stackings of digital slit–‐scans which tantalizingly hint at their origins as music and video games.
Hyo Myoung’s work is part of the London University of the Arts permanent collection.
