“Mother and Child”, displayed at Gazelli Art House as part of Toute Seule, alongside Rachel Whiteread, Nancy Spero, Elizabeth Murray and Rebecca Allen is a piece on breastfeeding. It features Lily Cole and is raises the sensitive subject of breast-feeding in public.
Drawing inspiration from the long tradition of mother and child painting, Colbert reinterprets the imagery in a contemporary way bringing to the fore the sensitive subject of breast-feeding in public. Despite the beauty and benefits of breastfeeding, the act still has a stigma attached to it. Not only are women today still shamed for breastfeeding in public, but many are kicked out of establishments for nursing their child.
