Sapient 1 and Sapient 2 (2023) are two works from Recycle Group’s Sapient body of work, imagining scenes from a future utopian society shaped by artificial intelligence. Constructed from plywood, recycled plastic, polycarbonate and LED, the works depict crowds of figures within an imagined digital environment, suggesting a collective society in which traditional structures of power have been replaced by a new form of technologically enabled governance. Each work is conceived as a standalone composition, but when displayed together they form a continuous scene, bringing the full gathering of figures into view.
