Bea Bonafini draws upon mythology, spirituality and ecological thinking to create shapeshifting forms that move between human, animal and imagined worlds. Working across tapestry, cut carpet, cork painting, ceramics and installation, her practice reimagines ancient archetypes through richly tactile and materially experimental forms. Whispsilk (2022) is a painting on engaved cork, in two crescent halves. Sinous lines in translucent gouache and watercolour depict supernatural creatures enveloped within with motifs of reachin fingers, flickering flames and flowing water. Originating from sustainable Sardinian cork forests, the material Bonafini uses is alive with the magical properties of this soft and porous Mediterranean wood.
