Bea Bonafini draws upon mythology, spirituality and ecological thinking to create shapeshifting forms that move between human, animal and imagined worlds. Working across tapestry, cut carpet, cork painting, ceramics and installation, her practice reimagines ancient archetypes through richly tactile and materially experimental forms. How Fury Struck (2022) is one of a series of three large double-sided cut carpet tapestries. These floating, cascading bodies were inspired by different mythological incarnations of hybrid, birdlike female figures (furies, harpies, Valkyries) that travel between different worlds, and are feared for their superhuman strength. Pierced with hand carved ceramic shards, and with areas of hand-tinted pigmment, Bonafini draws together fragmented and fluid parts together into a heterogenous whole. Suspended in the air from the ceiling the creatures carry threat as they dive for their prey, but also graceful and vulnerable.
