"We would call these mash-ups now." — Rhea Myers

Mixes used early sampling and morphing software to combine images of what was then considered to be canonical contemporary art in order to create visual and conceptual relationships between them. By doing so the resulting new images interrogated and critiqued their sources and made something new from their surplus value.

Cold, masculine computing technology was seen as an unpromising medium for realizing the human warmth of art and for the critique of patriarchal order. Mixes does so under the combined influences of sample-based electronic music and feminist art history at a specific moment in the realization of the promise of both.
