Executed in the final year of Sandra Blow’s life, Brown Blue and Red is a striking example of the monumental abstract paintings that characterised the artist’s late practice. The composition constructed from geometric forms becomes interrupted by vivid blocks of red and blue together with textured burlap fragments. Colour, form, texture and space were central concerns throughout Blow’s career, and her late paintings demonstrate an increasingly distilled approach to these elements. Scale also played a significant role; the artist often introduced spatial tension through tactile materials and three-dimensional elements, diving in and out of hard-edged abstraction through carefully considered compositions.
