Plum over Pink (1961–63) forms part of Perle Fine’s Cool Series (1961–63) body of work that marked a significant evolution in her earlier Abstract Expressionist practice. Following her move from the city to the countryside, Fine shifted away from the neoplastic influence of Mondrian, allowing colour to become increasingly mixed and unstable. In Plum over Pink, rich plum hues bleed into the muted pink ground, softening the boundaries between forms. Fine described this period as responding to “a need within the painting to express more”. Rather than imposing emotion, these works invite the viewer to experience colour and space as Fine’s purest form of expression. Her soulful yet considered Cool Series engages both the emotions and the intellect, creating an encounter that borders on spiritual.
