Kalliopi Lemos’ Sunset Glow series (2025) brings together the fragility of floral forms with the permanence and weight of steel. Small canvases depicting translucent, delicately rendered petals are set within robust mild-steel frames. The series reflects Lemos’ more than fifteen years of study of Japanese Ikebana, the art of floral arrangement in which line, space and balance are fundamental. Translating these principles onto the canvas, Lemos closely crops her compositions, isolating petals so that they approach abstraction, while carefully considering negative space, balance and placement. A sensitivity to the transient and unpredictable qualities of nature runs through much of Lemos’ practice. In Sunset Glow, she turns her attention to the fleeting nuances of light and colour at sunset, capturing a constantly-shifting moment.
