"Over many decades and in various forms, Joan Truckenbrod’s work has distinguished itself by creating a unique conduit between technology and nature, giving abstract form to natural phenomena or understanding the body and self in its fusion of natural and technological processes. From her early digital drawings and tapestries, to assemblages reflecting on transformations of the body through illness, Truckenbrod has captured phenomena in nature through digital rematerializations. Joan Truckenbrod’s woven works explore hidden systems of connectivity, from fungal networks and sound patterns to the structures underpinning natural phenomena. Combining digital Jacquard weaving with hand-dyed fibres, metallic threads and sculptural interventions, her practice reveals intricate relationships between technology and ecology.

Harmonizing (2020) is a woven work in tones of green, pink and purple. Its imagery was inspired by the disruption of leaf forms caused by the actions of insects, for Truckenbrod an example of non-linear organic growth. Her choice to explore this topic of the interconnectedness of species in the linear process of weaving provides tensions and challenges. The synthesis of the grid forms of the warp and the weft intersecting one another soften the harshness of the forms and Truckenbrod integrated bamboo, linen and cotton threads - all fibres of plant origin. Using four colored threads on the TC2 hand digital Jacquard loom Truckenbrod can achieve 16 visual colors, similar in a way to the visual color mixing of the Pointillists painters.
