Narrative:
‘Jane McAdam Freud Object’
P.7 ‘I feel McAdam Freud has grabbed the paintbrush, like a baton, from some of the geniuses of art history’
P.8 ‘Looking at Digging for God I see another canvas; Courbet’s painting, Burial at Ornans, which records a funeral, acknowledging the importance of dignity in death as much as it honours life. With vices and garden implements used to reflect on the meaning of a quote by George Bernard Shaw, in The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God, about digging in the garden to find god. “The best place to seek God is in a garden. You can dig for him there.” In Block, Tackle and Screech of the Painted Circle I hear the synesthetic screening of Kandinsky mystically painting a circle that doesn’t actually exist, other than in spirit - in the air.’
