British electronic artist duo Gibson/Martelli, made up of Ruth Gibson and Bruno Martelli, are graduates of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology – possessing a joint PhD in immersivity and somatic sensing. The duo’s worldwide commissions include residencies in North America, China, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
Gibson/Martelli’s diverse exhibition record comprises shows such as ‘Enter Through The Headset 5’(2020), 'Enter Through The Headset 4 (2019), Enter Through The Headset 2 (2017) at Gazelli Art House, London, and further shows at the Barbican, London (2014), the Detroit Institute of Arts (2013), and the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007). They also participated in the London Film Festival: Expanded (2020) at the British Film Institute. The pair’s work was also included at Oregon’s Quills Fest online (2021), and the Ars Electronica Festival, Linz (2020).
The artists’ accolades include a BAFTA nomination and award wins at the Henry Moore Foundation New Commission and the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts (NESTA), along with the Lumen Gold Prize in 2015.
The duo recently completed an AI and machine learning project with collaborators at Goldsmiths University of London and the Creative Computing Institute at London’s University of the Arts. Bruno spent time as a visiting lecturer at AA School of Architecture, while Ruth is now an Associate Professor at the Centre for Dance Research at Coventry University. The artists live and work in London.
