Rebirth begins with a dense, dark ground, close to soil or bark. At its centre, a surge of red, ochre, teal, white and pink moves diagonally across the canvas, as though forcing its way upward through matter that would rather remain closed.
The painting holds the moment of breaking open as its subject. Beside it, the small steel works Through the Thorns I and II echo the thorn from Thorn Throne, but reduce it to a branch-like structure stripped of flesh. Across these works, growth and fabricated form occupy the same field, with the passage from one material state to another becoming part of the work’s relation to transformation.
