Entangled Others’ self-contained 009.4 (2024) forms part of the duo’s ongoing self-contained series (2023–2024), which examines how information is encoded and decoded in both organic and digital systems. Using image datasets of aquatic animals and plants, the artists enact a generative process in which a target image is iteratively “crossbred” with compressed fragments from other images, producing mutative evolutions akin to grafting in nature. These are decoded back into recognisable forms with the help of neural networks trained on the same dataset, restoring colour and detail while retaining traces of transformation. The resulting animations, displayed on bespoke screens, evoke shifting watercolour studies of new life forms, mirroring the remixing and mutation found in both ecosystems and digital culture. This iteration marks the first in the series to be paired with a sculptural element — a custom 3D-printed stainless steel vessel containing a vial of synthetic DNA in which the artwork itself is stored — completing a full-circle journey from simulated biology to physical genetic material.
