Yes-Indeed! (1991) is a large-scale acrylic on canvas composed of broad, sweeping passages of colour and layered gestural marks. Areas of contrasting colour, suggestive of light and shadow, are set against more densely worked passages, creating a sense of spatial depth. The title, Yes-Indeed!, has an emphatic and almost conversational quality, suggesting a sense of dialogue and response that is echoed in the energetic exchange between forms and colours across the painting.
Fenichel’s broad swathes of colour recall the immediacy of her 1960s, associated with the second-generation Abstract Expressionist movement. In this later work of the 1990s, she revisits that same gestural language through a more developed understanding of colour, structure and surface, shaped by decades of experimentation with these essential painterly elements.
