Boats Carrying Hope 1 (2025) features translucent pink-tinged petal forms on a background of blue and green vertical bands. These shapes evoke clouds or boats which hover in the picture plane. Boats – symbols of displacement and endurance – are a motif Lemos has returned to across her career. Responding to the long history of human migration and to her own deep personal connection to the sea, Lemos has made sculptures of boats in a variety of materials at differing scales, from the monumental to the intimate. Expressing her solidarity with those forced to flee home and face danger in the hope of a better future, the delicate curving vessels in this painting seem to glow, offering a note of optimism in turbulent times.
