On this retrieved object, which couples two functions; that of a breadboard and that of a book holder, a third function is arrived at through intervention – that of an easel. The third function represents for me ‘another way’.
BreadBook questions the choices we ultimately ignore when coming down on one side or another. I carved the motto ‘One or Other’ which is contrasted with an alternative version ‘One Another’. ‘One Another ‘suggests a togetherness rather than separateness – ‘us’ rather than ‘us and them’. ‘Us and them’ has an implicit vilification of a common enemy, ‘the other’. The ultimate question is how to change these patterns of opposing positions – to find a third way.
