Wood carving is a further technique Lemos has mastered, and in her pieces Snakes and Apples series of three unique works (2012) meticulously crafted objects are containers that house further forms within them. The parts of the sculptures contained inside the apples are removable, become hand-held toy-like objects, evoking innocence and childhood. Ths creates a tension with the notion of threat and temptation indicated by the Garden of Eden Christian iconography. The sculptues operate as vessels for containing history, emotion and threat. The dramatically dark charred wood was produced using the Japanese process Shou Sugi Ban, showing again Lemos’ ability to adapt processes and ideas from across an international sweep of artistic production.
