Lilly Fenichel (1927 – 2016) born in Vienna, Austria, to a Jewish family, fled the Nazi invasion in 1939, eventually settling in Hollywood. A student at various art institutions in California, Fenichel’s abstract expressionist paintings from the 1960s and 1970s, influenced by West Coast and New York School styles, garnered attention. Transitioning to New Mexico in 1981, she continued her artistic journey, exploring geometric abstractions and organic forms, earning her a retrospective at the David Richard Gallery in 2014 and posthumous inclusion in the 2023 exhibition Action, Gesture, Paint: Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940-70 at the Whitechapel Gallery in London.
