Lemos’ earliest piece in the exhibition, After War and Peace (1997) was inspired by Rubens’ Minerva Protects Pax from Mars ('Peace and War) (1629–30). Lemos paid numeous visits to the National Gallery to obseving the Rubens canvas. She absorbed a feeling, and rather than a precise version of the compostions the figues in her pastel and oil study on paper are raw and elemental.
