Untitled (i23-3578), 1972, comprises three rows of three schematic motifs Created using Cohen’s
First Generation Drawing Machine and early ‘freehand line’ algorithm, this work belongs to
the series of early computer generated drawings shown in the 1973 exhibition Machine Generated
Images, at the La Jolla Museum in San Diego. An important period within Cohen’s oeuvre, these
works were made using the programme titled ‘Tree-Search’, one of the earliest programme names
applied by Cohen to the various generative programmes he developed in this period. Written in
BASIC, the Tree-Search programme ran in partnership with a Hewlett Packard 2100A and plotter
to produce this work.
