A SKY FULL OF LARKS – THROUGH THE RAINBOWS WE FLY

2016

14 January – 17 January 2016

Private View: 13 January 2016 | 6-8 PM

Gazelli Art House is delighted to announce Anon. a surrealist site-specific installation by artist duo Walter & Zoniel.  Affiliated with Lumiere London*,  Anon. houses luminous old age pensioners as living sculptures. Viewed from the street, the installation, which is only open at night, takes over the whole building, illuminating Dover Street. Highlighting living sculptures of glow-in-the-dark-grannies, each installed in solitary existence, the individuals become highly luminous, glowing under the flash-lights of the artists’ cameras.

Within the installation the artists perpetually photograph the reflective subjects, triggering their luminosity throughout the night. The stream of abstract images taken by the artists are then projected into the windows above the installation, in real time, forming a wall of rolling imagery remaining present for a matter of minutes before being replaced by the next image.

The surrealist installation is a reflection upon the human condition and our relationship to the modern world, themes that the artists often explore in their work. Walter and Zoniel are renowned for presenting questions within their art, utilising surrealism or fun in installations to evoke thought. The playful spirit of this fantastical piece, housing fluorescent geriatrics allows a basis to pose much deeper questions around isolation within our society, our relationships to digital media, obsessions with photography and our cultural relationships towards ageing. The juxtaposition of the glow-in-the-dark geriatrics, coming to life under the flashlight against the perpetual stream of digital imagery being produced is aimed to be both beautiful and evoke thought on the subject matter.

The surrealist nature of the art is a theme in their work and aimed at evoking joy, inspiration and reflection at the unsuspecting sight of such an unusual event.  Further themes of the work reflect upon the proliferation of the photograph in mass and social media and with that the changing manner in which we communicate with one another on a day-to-day basis.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a performance which will be held every evening  following the launch, from Thursday 14th to Sunday 17th of January between 6 and 9 PM. The performance will be visible from outside of the gallery.
